On Christmas day 820ad, the Eastern Romans crowned Michael II Emperor Romanum. He was still wearing the fetters the previous Emperor, Leo V, had ordered him into. Leo V had been murdered during the Christmas Church services, and the supporters of Michael rushed his prison and freed him, the soldiers immediately giving him Imperium, and crowning him before a locksmith could be procured to remove the chains.
