Even though no unit during the Civil War ever sported this uniform, I am inclined to produce a regiment modeled after this lithograph, it is "historical" after a fashion...

E.D. Baker, personal friend of Abe Lincoln, valiant soldier, expressive statesman, a man of high moral character and honorable integrity, still remains in the most Roman Republican of Traditions, the only Sitting US Senator to die in battle.  

 

I reproduce here his most famous oration, made in congress after the debacle of Bull Run, in response to Breckenridge's cavails and urgings to let the Union be sundered...

a immigrant from Austria, and veteran of the Civil War, and artist, Mr. Kurz in partnership with his backer Allison, would become extremely successful in the post war years mass producing highly colored oleolithographs of patriotic battle scenes, these Kurz and Allison prints feature romanticised, exciting images crowded with figures and met a hungry demand for affordable displays in the homes of lower and middle class Americans in the 1870s to 1905 era.

    These scenes are an important influence on my civil war figure painting style...

Impunged by Mr. Roosevelt with the damning quote "In all our history, there is no more despicable character."[

THAT is low condemnation indeed.  A Revolutionary War officer notable for his graft, corruption, and shoved off into the Louisiana Territory by Jefferson. He was a spy for Spain, and tried to sabotage the Red River and Mississippi expeditions.
