Alaska's first connection to world communications networks was through the US Army's Signal Corps laying a submarine cable from Seattle, the first cable ship was lost and replaced by a ship captured from the Spanish in Cuba, rechristened after General Burnside. So the Spanish war brought African American Soldiers to Juneau, Spanish Ships to Valdez, and Morse Code to Palmer.
